Local Journalists and Working Conditions from a Gender Perspective

Gender inequalities in the work context have been highlighted by studies in different areas. Journalism is no exception, with the pandemic aggravating the situation. Although the work of journalists has been studied and research on local media has grown, little is known about the professionals working in this field. Gender studies are even scarcer. Through a survey of journalists from local media in the central region of Portugal, we sought to identify labor inequalities. It is concluded that women are the youngest in the sample (n=91), the ones with the least experience, the most precarious bonds, and they reveal the worst expectations regarding their future employment.
