Post-feminism, post-racialism and post-colonialism: The media coverage of Joacine Katar Moreira’s campaign

The relations between gender, power and politics resonate deeply in the media representation of women in the political field, normalizing models of femininity and conceptions of participation in the public sphere. Based on this assumption and using an intersectional approach anchored to a feminist perspective, this article draws on critical thematic analysis to examine the media coverage of the campaign for the 2019 Portuguese legislative elections by Joacine Katar Moreira. We identify the prevailing ideological discourses, relating them to the concepts of post-feminism, post-racialism and postcolonialism, and questioning their implications for equal access to political decision-making and for the effective promotion of gender equality.
