Sexual Violence in Portugal: An Analysis of Media Discourse in the Online Press

This article analyzes the media discourse on sexual violence in Portugal, based on 299 news reports from 2021. Results show that 95% of perpetrators are men and 87% of victims are women. Sexual abuse (50.5%) and rape (42.2%) are the most common cases. In 84.6% of incidents, victim and perpetrator knew each other (42% were family, 42.6% acquaintances), with the home being the main setting for the crime (62.7%). The study highlights the perpetuation of rape myths and victim-blaming in media discourse. These findings reinforce the need for ethical journalism focused on prevention, myth deconstruction, and fighting re-victimization, promoting greater public awareness.
